A Look Back at The Hilltop’s Story
Perched along County Rd. 19, The Hilltop was more than a bar — it was a Hanover landmark. With roots tracing back to the 19th Century as a hotel and general store, it carried a rich history. It even counted Minnesota’s own Bob Dylan as a frequent (and famously private) guest. There’s even a local legend that Dylan once brought Willie Nelson for a drink — with the requirement that patrons turn over their phones to keep the visit under wraps.
The Hilltop’s story doesn’t stop there. The iconic venue appeared in the film Thin Ice starring Greg Kinnear, with scenes shot at both The Hilltop (briefly renamed “Big Dick’s Bar” for the movie) and other spots around Hanover.
The Hilltop’s Next Chapter
After years of sitting quiet, a group of local restaurateurs has stepped in to revive The Hilltop, giving it a fresh new look while preserving its history. Say goodbye to the biker-bar vibes and hello to a family-friendly hangout with all-new interiors, upgraded parking, and a carefully restored nod to its past.
Trust me — when the doors reopen in August 2025, you’ll want to be first in line for one of their NEW Smashburgers, an ice-cold beer and a bunch of those Legendary Pull-Tabs!
